This unit reviews the ways in which tests and exams can be used effectively in classes. It Describes the difference between various types of tests and their purposes. For example, a placement test helps determine what class, group, or level a student should be placed in, a diagnostic test helps determine what a class knows in order to inform the teacher of which areas need work and which areas are well known. A progress test helps test for retention of knowledge learned throughout the course of the class (often including the ability of students to utilize this knowledge practically). Practice tests can be used to help students familiarize with and practice for external exams. External exams are official tests which generally have professional bearing and academic bearing. These exams may determine if a student has the level of English required for a job or university admission. This unit gives an overview of some of the most common external exams a student might be preparing to take.
