The unit covered the receptive skills of language, reading and listening. It discussed the purproses of reading and listening, which are for a purpose and for entertainment. The skills involved in listening and reading, and which should be seen as goals for students to achieve in learning a foreign language, are predictive skills, scanning, skimming, detailed information, and dedcution from context. There are several problems that come with reading and listening, but these issues can be alleviated by pre-teaching vocabulary that is essential to understanding, utilizing topics that are of interest, and creating tasks that are both challenging and achievable for students.
