This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
It is vitally important to realise how and under what circumstances the tense or grammar point is used. Some languages don?t have such a great variety of tenses, but as soon as a teacher fathoms all the difference in usage and master this knowledge, English tenses will become their favourites. I love English tenses, I adore them for the information (often bearing even emotional component) they provide yet out of the context. I?m ready to explain them in many different ways until I put their great power across. For example, talking about the present perfect I usually say that this tense is a sort of bridge between the past and the present, and this bridge may be presented by a result, by a period of time, by an action which still takes place, people themselves can be this kind of bridge as long as we talk about their life experience.
The adverbials of time and frequency will be often helpful while showing the difference between the tenses. Telling stories is a good practice. Songs and short cartoons (e.g. Peppa Pig) can be used as tools at Engage stage. Activate stage activities should combine practicing of communicative skills and proper using of two or three tenses.
