Unit 19 deals with teaching groups other than just adults and teaching one on one. Teaching beginners can have its own raft of problems. Five categories of beginners are Absolute Beginner (no previous English); False Beginner (some exposure, but little retention); Adult Beginner (often highly motivated because they are either paying themselves or their company is paying and expects results); Young Beginner (sometimes lack motivation because they did not make the decision themselves); Beginner Without Roman alphabet (will require a lot of extra work). One on one teaching has the advantage of no mixed levels, highly motivated pupils and clearly defined needs. On the downside, with only one student, the teacher give a 100% attention and time. Business English is a rapidly ESL trend. Many foreign businesses realize they must communicate internationally in English, and therefore need to send employees to classes. Problems can result from the corporate hierarchy being suddenly mixed together. Also ages can be widely dispersed and students can be tired after a days work. Needs analysis and carefully planned coursework are essential here. Overall I found Unit 19 to be very informative and eye opening in terms of possibly specializing in either teaching young children or business people.
