This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit has proven to be a huge encouragement to me for multiple reasons. As a new TEFL teacher who is REALLY looking forward to the possibility of being able to teach in La Paz, Bolivia, I believe that the contrast between the two videos and teaching styles has proven to lead me in the right direction for when I graduate.
I have learned many things... First and foremost, a teacher needs to have a clear plan that engages the students in an equal manner and provides a maximized experience for learning that incorporates every student, regardless of language level. It's important to engage the students in a manner that shows interest in their learning - but not to the point that it becomes overbearing and intimidating. Visual cues are important in teaching because they offer a universal language that can breed connection between all levels of students, regardless of their background and cultural differences.
Apart from what I learned to do and not to do as a teacher, I also learned that coming up with a lesson plan for each teaching opportunity is crucial because it provides for the students a clear and concise manner of learning that promotes progress throughout each individual stage of learning. A teacher can fully teach an entire year's worth of material effectively using lesson plans that build off each plan before them.
