Unit 13 examined Pronunciation and Phonology. It acknowledged the difficulties in distinguishing subtle intonation in speech, and how that can complicate the teaching of it, but provided tools for mapping intonation in sentences and stress on syllables in words for a visual guide to the sounds. The unit included charts showing the phonemic alphabet and the manner and place of articulation, as well as diagrams to show where and how articulation occurs in human anatomy. There is a scene in the old film, \"Singing in the Rain,\" in which the characters played by Gene Kelley and Donald O'Connor meet with a diction coach and end up making a song about pronunciation out of tongue twisters, which might lend itself well to a lesson about pronunciation.
