This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
At the moment I can only relate to teaching children and find that the things that were outlined in this unit is very true in a classroom setting. One of the toughest things to control for us is to minimize the amount of Japanese the children speak. Some kids are great but you get a few students who don't stop talking in Japanese. It might have something to do with classroom management and the fact that they know they can get away with it, however, I also think it has to do with the fact that they don't have enough English vocabulary under their belt. Like I mentioned in previous units our classes are a mix of students with quite different English levels. So while some are clearly following the lesson, other kids drop off and lose interest. Some classes work better than others depending on the topic and the kind of activities we do. Our main focus now is to try to separate the kids according to their level of English so the teachers can design a better lessons and also so the students can start to learn at a more accelerated pace.
At the moment I think we're doing well even though we face these challenges. They enjoy coming into class and most of the students have a lot of fun in every class. We've learned to think on our feet and adapt depending on how the students react to certain games and topics and to keep things interesting for them so they can actually leave the class having learnt something.
