Pronunciation is an important part of learning English. Most students are concerned with proper pronunciation, and many of them find it difficult. There are some general guidelines that can be followed for proper pronunciation. There are patters for intonation and stress for sentences. Intonation patterns of rise/fall, fall/rise, and flat intonation are key to expressing the meaning of what is spoken. They are used to express agreement, disagreement, surprise or questioning. Stress of certain words in a sentence is used to convey the main point of a the speaker.
There are guidelines for proper stressing of syllables in a word. When the students learns proper stressing of syllables, his speech will sound more normal.
The international Phonetic Alphabet is a valuable tool to teach proper pronunciation. Since many sounds in English can be written in various ways, the phonetic alphabet can be used as a standard to teach the sounds of a word.
