Unit 13 explored the delicate functions that are involved in phonology (stress, intonation, sound placement/manner/voice). It should not be assumed that every ESL student has every sound that we see on the IPA chart in his or her phonemic repertoire. Like an English speaker learning Arabic, some sounds will have to actively be taught, as they are not shared across languages. Just as you can predict certain errors in tense, you can also predict certain sound substitutions depending on the ESL students? first language. The same can be said for some languages and stress as well as intonation. Phonological aspects of speech should be addressed consistently as it plays a large role in conveying a speaker?s meaning/intention as well as being understood by unfamiliar listeners.
