For some reason this unit helped me to get a better grasp of ways to teach the grammar rules in general. I started to really understand the importance of memorizing/considering the combination rules (such as subject + verb + ed). I think that initially, I found the grammar units extremely challenging as a native speaker because these are rules that I apply in every day speech without really considering that I am applying them. I was trying to understand how to teach a student to make these choices second nature without considering the rules. On one hand, I think this reflection process is important as a teacher of English to foreign language speakers because it helps me to understand how difficult it can be to master the English language. On the other hand, after reading this chapter I started to see how the patterns of the rules seem to make sense. I think that one problem is understanding or avoiding confusion with the names of the grammar tenses (such as past perfect or future continuous) and the application of or use for the tense. Perhaps it might make more sense to assist the students with a suggestion in regards to the timing of the event that is more easily recognizable based on the primary language of the student. This reflection led me to believe that understanding the students' native language could be a tool for the teacher and, grouping classes based on their first language might be helpful.
