This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Course materials should include an appropriate mix of authentic and created materials. However, depending on the language level of the students, the lesson being taught and the expertise of the teacher, he/she may choose to use more of one than the other. Created materials are useful to help teachers supplement course books and reinforce certain language points. Course books do not always fit the specific needs of the students and are unlikely to address in depth the language problems that different nationalities face. A good course book provides a balanced mix of grammar and vocabulary, and shows the progression of the language lessons. The course book, however, is not an excuse for teachers to stop being creative in their lesson plans. Rather, teachers should become familiar with the course books in order to anticipate when to omit, supplement, adapt and/or replace course books to make the lesson interesting and engaging for the students.
