There are teachers that like course books and others that do not. While it is required to use them, it?s up to the teacher how they want to use them. They could use the course books to omit, replace, supplement or adapt the material to their lessons. With that, there are advantages and disadvantages. Some advantages are that it?s expected by the students, it provides security for students and teachers alike and it offers continuity and progression. Some disadvantages are that it doesn?t fit the specific interest and needs of all the class members and exclusive use of a course book can become predictable and boring to students. That?s why it?s a good idea to include authentic and created materials into your lesson to make it more fun for them. I learned how to best use the course book. I always thought that the teacher followed the outline in the book. However, I realize now while it?s good to use the course book, it?s better to not use it all the time or use it along with other planned activities.
