Assessments are an important part of teaching. There are many types of tests that are given for different purposes. Placement and diagnostic tests are designed to find out what students? abilities are, and how to group them by level. Progress tests are used in the classroom to monitor students' learning and retention as well as, giving the students the chance to evaluate their own progress. Practice tests are used to prepare students for a comprehensive exam, and should follow the same format as the actual test to be effective. There are also many exams that are given outside the school; these are called external exams. External exams are used by universities and businesses to assess the abilities of prospective students and/or employees. Some of the most widely used are: TOEFL, IELTS, and TOEIC. Cambridge also offers many certificate programs based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Even though tests can be a useful tool for teachers, they should not be over-used in the classroom. Teachers should use a balance of formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and/or problems with the material being covered.
