This unit describes the different types of tests that can be used to measure the students' language abilities. Placement tests are used at the start to measure a student's level of English and diagnostic tests, which are similar to placement tests, are also done at the start of a course to find out what the students already know. Progress test are used periodically to find out what the learners have learnt and remembered, and finally practice tests are used to prepare students for the external exams. There are different types of external examinations, including TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC and the Cambridge assessment.
