Developing both receptive and productive skills are important for creating well-rounded lessons that are suited for the learner's interest and abilities. Reading and listening skills are how we ingest information, whether it's for a purpose such as directions or for entertainment like a good book. Exposing students to a wide-variety of appropriately leveled authentic and non-authentic texts, helps motivate students to study a new language. Even though all structures of the ESA method would work in developing a student's reading and listening comprehension skills, it's important to keep in mind that the lesson should be interesting. The teacher should try build enthusiasm before a lesson, pre-teach challenging text, use different materials or tasks, as well as have a fun project or activity to engage students in a realistic way.
