Receptive skills, reading and listening, are an important part of language learning. Students must be motivated by choosing topics that are interesting to the students. Students also have other motivations for using their receptive skills that include, reading or listening for a purpose and for pleasure. There are specific skills used by readers and listeners depending on their purpose for reading. It is important to be aware of these skills when planning lessons.
It is also important to get to know your students, so you can find out what interests they have. Not all students share the same interests, so it is best for the teacher to cover many topics throughout the class, to engage all students. When planning a lesson for receptive skills, it is important to be aware of the problems associated with reading and listening, such as: connections with the language contained in the text, the topic, and the tasks to be performed, sentence length, word length and the number of unfamiliar words. Two of the ways to approach language difficulty is to pre-teach essential vocabulary and careful select non-authentic text that is more suitable for their abilities.
