A student can have a huge vocabulary and perfectly correct grammar, but if he or she has poor pronunciation, they still will not be able to communicate. The intonation within sentences and the stress within words can completely change the meaning being spoken and can lead to misunderstandings or frustration. The best way for students to learn the pronunciations in English words is by practicing speaking, but a dictionary can be very helpful. For a dictionary to assist a student, they must learn the phonetic symbols for the various sounds, since they cannot figure out English (unlike some other languages) by spellings alone.
Many sounds may be completely unknown to students, since they are unused in their native languages. Learning correct pronunciation of these letters or letter combinations will be important. This can be done in a variety of ways - the instructor modeling or using vocal diagrams, for instance.
