This unit is regarding receptive skills: reading and listening. It starts with the reasons for reading and listening and how we employ several specialist skills when reading and listening. There are some expected problems regarding the teaching and learning of the mentioned skills, mostly related to the language, the topic and the tasks. The language problems can be easily overcome by pre-teaching vocabulary, even though students should be encouraged to skim for the general idea and not the meaning of every single word and by presenting to the class real texts and not only the ones designed to language students. The topics should be as much interesting as possible and the teacher has also a role when it comes to create interest on the topic. Finally, the tasks should promote understanding and not only check it.
