Unit Four looked at teaching vocabulary, grammar structures and language functions within the ESA context. I found teaching vocabulary especially interesting given my experience of learning foreign languages. In my experience, I have been taught words that are not very useful to me while commonly used words were neglected. In this unit, I like the fact that appropriacy for the student and task and frequency and coverage are criteria in selecting words to teach as this will ensure students learn vocabulary that is most relevant to them.Watching the video lessons gave me a really good idea of how drastic the teacher's attitude can change the outcome of a lesson. Besides the way the teacher delivered the lesson, all other factors were the same. Both lessons had the same group of students yet their level of comprehension, involvement and enjoyment of the learning experience were drastically different. Being able to teach in a more effective way as we saw in the second video is something that takes practice and a genuine interest in providing a positive learning experience.
