This lesson was very challenging because there are so many variables in how to report reported speech. I also found it difficult to understand back shifting and explaining it to low level learners will be very challenging. The videos were much more helpful than the written material. The diagrams in the printed material were very confusing. Even the explainations of exceptions in the videos were hard to follow and I think these are areas of language that must be taught very slowly and very carefully because they are without hard fat rules.In this unit teachers can familiarize themselves with the kinds of factors they will need to think about when they select vocabulary and when they want to decide which kind of activities they will use in each stage of their ESA lesson. Additionally teachers get to see their options for arranging the stages of the lesson, whether straight arrow, boomerang, or patchwork. The unit encourages teachers to consider the guidelines but suggests they will always need to plan according to their students' real aptitudes and their own classes' needs.
