This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
I was studying linguistics in university, so phonology was part of my major, and I'm very familiar with it. So this chapter is more like a review of my old study. But I do feel the importance of teaching phonetics to students, just as the unit said. I found that the teaching skills for phonology are very practical, I would like to try them out during my class next time! In my experience, most students are very interested in learning IPA, so that they can read new words by themselves. I think it will help a lot if every English school provide phonetic classes. In this unit, I learned some information on different kinds of learners and teaching situations other than teaching adults in the classroom. I was most interested in the section on teaching children, since that is probably what I will be doing in the future. One thing that impressed me was the advice to not use the students' native language. I can be guilty of that, since I am able to speak their language! It was a good point and I want to try to make sure I don't set back the students' learning by using their native language as I am teaching them English.
