This unit has taught me a lot about common pitfalls that I could come across teaching English and how to avoid them. The first lesson is very important and it sets the tone for the rest of the semester. The first lessons should be used to build rapport, rather than teaching grammar as much as possible. It is a good opportunity to get to know the students and learn their names, and also see the students' level of English. The lessons provided great exercises that can be used as warmers for the first class.I enjoyed learning about the various advantages of using course books and agree that they provide a graded syllabus and tried methods. Supplementing the course texts is the best idea to ensure you are meeting the unique individual needs of the students in this particular classroom. Adding created material ensures fun, creativity and caters to the students' interests. I like the flash cards and crossword puzzles. I would also supplement with card and board games as this is a fun way to learn for all ages.
