This unit discussed the importance of materials. Specifically, the unit focused on the difference between authentic and inauthentic materials, as well as the importance of having a lesson plan. Essentially, authentic materials are materials found in the real world, which have not been made for the class. The downside is that these resources are not graded based on language level and the content may be inappropriate for your classroom. Inauthentic materials are resources with language learners in mind. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. A lesson plan is crucial, because it allows the teacher to track the course, have a guide for a substitute if he/she falls ill, and it creates structure for the course. At the end, the unit provides links to various resources that can potentially be used in the classroom.
