This unit is about teaching receptive skills. Reading and listening are the two receptive skills. People read and listen for a purpose and for entertainment. There are several different specialist skills needed for reading and listening successfully. They include, predictive skills, scanning for specific information, skimming for general idea, reading and listening for detailed information and deductive skills. A typical receptive skills lesson uses Patchwork teaching strategy. The steps are; engage, study, activate, study and activate. I've learnt that the basic keys to successful receptive skill lesson are; motivating the students, build interest before reading or listening, pre-teach complex vocabulary, vary the type of material, use the material to practice different skills and add active phases from the text.
