Unit 10 gives two video examples of a lesson on the modal auxiliary verb “can/can’t†and animal vocabulary. Though the learning objective was the same, the lessons were drastically different because of the attitude and teaching style of the teacher. The first lesson was poorly executed with the teacher acting gruff, discouraging participation through his demeanor, not explaining the grammar concept or the directions clearly, not being prepared, and lacking supervision/guidance during activities. The second lesson was significantly more successful because the teacher was cheerful, elicited student responses, managed the activities by making pairs, called on students by name, and encouraged as much as corrected. This unit clearly shows what a difference the teacher can make in the success of students.
