Unit four discusses the types of material you can use for your Business English classes. We can divide materials into two groups: Authentic and non-authentic.
The advantages of authentic materials are:
- They are real and may therefore be more interesting and realistic for students to use
- They are less predictable than materials specifically created for teaching
Disadvantages are:
- It takes longer for the teacher to source suitable materials
- The format may not be so user-friendly
- It can contain culturally or socially sensitive material
Things to keep in mind when designing non-authentic materials are:
- What language are you trying to teach the students?
- How is the language going to be used in the classroom?
- How are you going to show how to use the language?
- At which level is the language to be used?
