In order to be effective, teachers must understand their students' needs and adapt accordingly. As explained in this unit, all students need someone to act as manager, model, facilitator, prompter, and assessor, and thus they benefit from a multifaceted teaching style in which the teacher successfully plays each of these roles. However, students differ greatly from one another in terms of, among other things, English fluency, age, and cultural background. Therefore, an effective teacher must be sensitive to these differences and adapt his/her teaching style to each individual student's needs (while taking care to ensure that attention is given to the whole class in a balanced manner). If successful, the end result tends to be higher levels of student motivation, respect for the teacher, and academic achievement.
