In this unit we compare two ESL lessons, one effective and one ineffective. The first lesson is ineffective as the the instructor is detached rude, does not properly explain himself or give encouragement to the students. The second lesson is effective as the instructor is engaging and kind, learns the names of his students, ensures all of the students are involved, explains himself clearly, and uses pictures and examples. The second lesson is also an example of a straight arrow ESA lesson. The engage phase consists of eliciting vocabulary of animals and verbs using a game, pictures and miming. The study phase which introduces modal auxiliary verbs which is practice through fill in the gap exercises. The activate stage consists of a game where students create an imaginary animal and describe what it can and can't do.
