In unit 18, I learn about the nine modal auxiliary verbs and their usage. The modal verbs can change the formality and meaning of the main verb in a sentence and can be used for permission, ability, deduction, obligation, permission, promise and request etc.
In this chapter, I also learn about the two voices in English which are the active voice and the passive voice. For both active and passive voices, the tense remains the same. The form for the passive voice is the auxiliary verb ‘be’ + the past participle. Most often, the passive voice would be used when the agent is unknown, unimportant and concealed or when the sentence changes its focus.
Lastly, I learn about the three different categories of clauses-- the independent, dependent and relative clause, as well as the three basic types of phrasal verbs.
