This unit discusses the use of the course book in planning class. It presents the pros and cons of having a course book, and how a teacher can go about making sure they have the right mix of book coursework, what they call “authentic material†(content from the real world not necessarily intended to teach English), and material created by the teacher. I agree that book coursework can make you lazy; it is easy to become completely dependent on it for planning a day’s lesson. I think a good course book can be a good guide or syllabus of sorts that dictates the topics and grammar points that need to be covered in a given, but it is imperative to complement with other activities that keeps students interested in the class, and not feeling like they could have just bought the book rather than take a class.
