Reading and listening are receptive skills that are equally important along with speaking and productive skills. Some reads for an aim/purpose, some for pleasure. More so, there are predictive areas of reading, at times you only prefer reading the highlights or the whole of it.
Reading is said to be easier than listening because a student can have time to read and study again the texts, while listening is limited.
To engage student's attention, topics should be interesting. True, as individuals each student has their own choice, so a variety of topics should be agreed upon. As always, ES stages should be applied in this receptive skills in teaching your class. Engage them to be interested, study stage and pre-teach vocabularies and give them exam, and lastly, activate stage for them to adapt the lesson on their own.
