Traditionally there are 2 principal dimensions to language acquisition: lexis (vocabulary) and grammar (structures); but this simplistic model ignores other important functional factors such as spelling and phonetics. All such aspects need to be covered, in varying ways, to ensure a student is fully comfortable with an item of language. Depending on the language level and topic, the basic ESA lesson structure may appropriately be adapted. The paramount aim is to encourage the most possible learning in terms of most of the students actively progressing most of the time in one, or preferably several, of these language aspects. A skilled teacher will instinctually know how to deploy, blend and sequence different textures of activity to achieve optimal competence and confidence, individually and among the group as a whole.
