This unit demonstrates four major theories to consider when studying the L1 and L2 learning process. In addition, this unit discusses the various roles that a teacher must take on in a classroom environment. Sometimes a teacher is instructing, but other times a teacher may need to step in and become the policeman of the class or a counselor for a student in need. Furthermore, this unit discusses the classroom environment and how elements of the environment, such as the seating arrangements, can either help or hinder the development of a classroom activity. Finally, this unit discusses maturation and important developmental aspects of lesson planning. For example, 5-9 year olds have a different set of needs and abilities than 9-13 year olds and will respond better to lessons that are planned with their age group in mind.
