This unit concerned teaching the productive skills of speaking and writing. In speaking, both fluency and accuracy are important for students to learn. Accuracy activities are more controlled by the teacher and should reinforce correct usage of the language. Fluency activities are more controlled by the student and should encourage experimentation with the language. The teacher should not correct every error during fluency activities as this tends to discourage students from experimenting and being creative. Writing skills are also an important part of TEFL. However, many teachers tend to neglect writing skills because writing activities involve a lot of quiet independent study. Teachers should still encourage students to learn writing skills as they are an important part of becoming an effective communicator in English.
