This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit has helped me to get a grasp on a few of the harder parts of English grammar. For example, when to use \"the\" before a noun. I was rather surprised by the fact that the definite article \"the\" cannot be used before certain proper nouns but must be used before others. These rules seem rather arbitrary (e.g., use \"the\" before names of rivers, oceans, and seas, but not before lakes and bays), and knowing which parts of English grammar are more arbitrary and difficult will help me to be a more understanding and informed teacher. Reading this chapter also helped to correct some of my mistaken assumptions about which part of speech some common words are. For example, I had assumed beforehand that \"here\" is a noun, as it is in Chinese which I have been studying, but in English \"here\" and \"there\" are adverbs.
