This unit looked at reading and listening, what are known as the receptive skills. It states that reading skills have the advantage of the language being 'captured' on the page, allowing more time for reading. This is something I am very aware of due to the vast difference between my own reading and listening skills in the Spanish language. Making sure that anything you teach is relevant to the students, so that it creates interest and so stimulates their willingness to learn is very important, a theme that should be carried through all areas of the teaching. This unit has highlighted ways of providing texts that will challenge the students but still be accessible and keep their interests, such as picking a text that may need some initial explanation of more difficult words/structures but that will be understood overall.
