This unit is an overview of the parts of speech for the English language. The parts of speech that make up the language are: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, articles, prepositions, conjunctions, and gerunds. Each part has specific functions. Nouns are the subjects and objects of a sentence. Verbs explain what is happening. Adjectives add specific information about nouns. Adverbs usually describe how an action is done, though sometimes may modify adjectives or other adverbs. Conjunctions link objects, actions, qualities or clauses together. Articles introduce nouns. Pronouns replace more specific nouns. Gerunds are ing verbs when used as a noun. Prepositions show relationships between a noun and pronoun or other word in the sentence. For each part of speech there are rules of usage and irregularities to be cognizant of.
