Unit 11 Receptive skills include reading and listening. Reading and listening are done with a purpose in mind or simply for entertainment. People learn by reading and listening using predictive skills, scanning, skimming, pursue detailed information, and deduction. Some students will have difficulty with sentence length, word length, or unfamiliar words. Teachers can help their students with these difficulties by pre-teaching vocabulary and carefully selecting texts. Choosing a topic that is of interest to the students will help to get them involved in the lesson. This is where the engage phase of an ESA lesson plan is so important. You use the engage phase to present the topic of interest with the goal of student involvement. Motivated students will be more interested in participating during the study and activate phases.
