This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In this unit I learned about the importance of receptive skills; reading and listening. With reading skills it's important to start off with non-authentic texts, which are designed for language students and are aimed at the target ability of the students. When using authentic texts in the classroom it's important to be selective to be sure not to give students a text which will be much too difficult for them. These concepts are shown in a lesson plan framework (Straight Arrow ESA) to demonstrate how you can teach receptive skills to students. The example used is to talk about a famous singer/actor, have the student's describe what they know about the famous person already, and then have the student's watched a video about the famous person or read a passage about the famous person before answering true or false statements.
