In this unit, I learnt that there are many different types of English-language students, and that these students will be studying English for a variety of reasons. For example, you might get 'absolute beginners' who are studying business English to better their jobs. Consequently, a TEFL teacher's approach to teaching absolute beginners and students with some formal English education training will vary considerably. Furthermore, teaching individually as opposed to in a group also has its own set of unique challenges.
As a result of the different types of students a TEFL teacher may come across, a 'needs analysis' is a good way of determining what kind of expectations/hopes the students have for completing the course, as well as aiding the teacher in ascertaining how much prior English abilities (if any) the students have.
