This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This chapter looks at the theoretical side of teaching and learning. It starts from discussing major developmental theories, such as: Maturation theory, Environmental theory, and Constructivism. We learn how to follow the ‘standard communicative approach’ for the 5-9 and 9-13 years of age groups.A methodology for the 5-9 years of age group is based on so-called EP (Engage and Practice). Since the attention span of children at this age is very short, the lesson must involve lots of physical activities, games, role plays, and etc. For the group 9-13 years old we are advised to follow Jerremy Harmers’ ESA (Engage, Study, and Activate) methodology. The concentration of children at this age is higher than in the first group. Therefore, activities are based more on communication and interaction and can take longer.
