Grammar is the framework of language, so is important for a student to learn so that they will be better understood. Simple grammar can be taught to provide a student the basic sentence structures to convey simple concepts and give them an early sense of accomplishment. Understanding the 'why' of word usage can be empowering, as they will be able to build their own sentences. More complex sentence structures and word usage can be added slowly and using exercises or games, can provide a break from the tedium of memorization. English is both difficult to spell and has so many rule exceptions, memorization is essential, but concepts should be taught at a measured pace so students do not become discouraged. May be helpful to explain to students that even native-English speakers do not always know or use the rules correctly.
