Classroom equipment and teaching aides are a cornerstone of ESL programs. Whereas simple lectures or labs might be enough to benefit a class taught in a student's native language, teaching a second language requires a greater amount of visual, and interactive teaching. This includes use of many electronic devices which require a thorough understanding of proper operation. Once able to properly operate any equipment, a teacher needs lessons fitted for the device that are still effective. After creating a lesson that effectively uses these devices, it is still important to have a back up plan in the event malfunction occurs. Old fashioned books, pictures or photos, and any visual aide that is not digital may be obsolete in a technical sense, but still carry a lot of weight in a teaching sense and should not be taken for granted.
