In this unit, the different past tenses were explained. There are four aspects to the past tense just like the present tense: which is the past simple tense, the past continuous tense, the past perfect tense and the past perfect continuous tense. The past simple tense is used to describe completed actions in the past in general. The past continuous tense describes past action in progress at the time given, for uninterrupted past actions, or to describe gradual development in the past. The past perfect tense describes completed actions viewed from a past viewpoint. The past perfect continuous tense is used when describing longer actions in the past that had continued up to the past moment that we are talking about. Common mistakes/errors students make are also covered, as well as a few sample activate stage ideas for each tense.
