Building a positive rapport with the class is a major factor in creating interest, holding attention, building confidence within the group and maintaining discipline. Students are more likely to respond in a positive way when they are comfortable with those around them, including the teacher. Students will be more likely to interact and take part in class activities.
A teacher that shows the same amount of respect for others gains respect for herself. The teacher must lead by positive example and the students will respond in positive fashion. A person using good eye contact and open gesticulation shows those around her that she is approachable. Putting attention to the comfort of individuals in the group, such as seating arrangements, student grouping conveys not just a teacher at the head of the class, but a caring educator.
