Unit 14 is about coursebooks and materials: their uses; the advantages and disadvantages of using them; the need for supplementary material to make the lessons more appropriate to the particular group of students; the factors that have to be taken into account when choosing the coursebooks; and how to use these if they are available/chosen. Examples of exercises from coursebooks, such as crossword puzzles, conversational exercises and pictures were also shown. An important part of the unit is the distinction made between authentic and created materials. In my opinion, both are useful, and created materials make it much easier, as a teacher, to concentrate on explaining a specific part of grammar. However, nothing beats authentic materials such as books, the news, films or programs for eliciting interest in the first place.
