This chapter emphasizes the equal importance of both reading and listening which are considered receptive skills. An important aspect to check for with receptive skills would be comprehension. Ther different purposes for reading and listening would be for a purpose, to scan for detailed information to skim for general information, to deduce information and to read or listen for detailed information.
It is important that when teachers teach receptive skills that the topics are interesting, the teacher must also motivate and engage students into the topics, pre-teach difficult vocabulary so there is good comprehaension, vary the material over time, use realisitic comprehension tasks and make sure that the topics are at the students level. The activate stage should naturally come from the lead of the engage and study phases.
