There are a variety of methodologies for teaching English as a foreign language. Some aspects of the methodologies, such as Audio-Lingualism's drilling exercises and Presentation, Practice, and Produce, can be used to enrich the lesson plan. However, in order to fully engage and motivate students, the best method to use in the classroom is Engage, Study and Activate or 'ESA'. 'ESA' is a method that can be simplified or made more complex by adding or subtracting 'ESA' sections over the course of the lesson. 'ESA' lessons are identified as straight arrows, boomerangs, or patchworks to help plan for different language levels. The structure of the lesson combined with proper, effective activities to increase participation and its ability to give and receive feedback make 'ESA' an easily learned and important method for TEFL teachers.
