I have learned that there are many ways of teaching. The ESA method was developed by Jeremy Harmer and incorporates a number of previously used methods such as grammar translation. Most language learning was done by repetition and habit formation. Mr. Harmer found that he could utilize role playing, miming, and student centered lessons more effectively. Through ESA the process always starts with engaging students. Eliciting information by asking questions, using drawings and real objects uses more student discovery and less teacher telling. Then studying the students can work in groups. These sequences can be used in different orders as long as the Activate happens at the end and the engage happens first. Lastly it is always better for the student to self correct being mindful of the importance of respect and encouragement.
