I learned that the four skills necessary for any language--listening, reading, writing, and speaking--can be divided into the receptive skills of listening and reading and the productive skills of writing and speaking. I learned that motives for listening and reading can be divided into two categories: for a purpose, or for entertainment purposes. I also learned about a number of specialist skills that people employ when reading and listening, including scanning or skimming, deducing from context, or absorbing detailed information. I also learned about the elements that go into teaching and learning receptive skills, such as the difficulties posed by exposing students to new language through the reading of authentic and non-authentic texts, as well as choosing appropriate topics for the class and trying to engage student interest.
